Fred Martin, a poor workman, meets with an accident which costs him his arm. Mrs. Martin calls on James Thompson, the owner of the factory, to seek aid, which he refuses. Thompson purchases a beautiful oil painting of the Madonna. His conscience bothers him, and as he sat in his library that evening smoking, he imagined that the Madonna stepped from the picture and pleaded with him to help his employee, who had been so faithful. His conscience got the better of him, and he did help.
