Amanda had thrown Gabriel out and taken Elias' dad Dieter back, but now finds the scum-bag with another woman, so she wants things back. Gabriel had returned to heaven, where he's training to become St.Peter's successor, so when Amanda declares Gabriel's position open again Helmut jumps at it, using his ability to take his shape, but only for a relatively short while each time. Gabriel can't watch that, and is falsely accused of returning to earth and consorting with a mortal anyhow, so he uses the same ability to move in Helmut's place in his shape.
