Dr. Georg Rentmeister on vacation in Reichenhall (Bavaria) is going to meet his friend Karl in Salzburg (Austria). But due to foreign currency regulations he is only allowed to spend 10 Deutschmarks a month in Austria. After having spent the whole amount for a hat he purchased he is not able to pay the bill in a restaurant, where he assumed to meet his friend Karl who may have helped him out of this dilemma. So a young girl Konstanze who is pretending to be a parlor maid but is in fact a countess pays the bill. He falls for her so they decided to meet again. The reason for Konstanze being a parlor maid is, that her father earl Leopold von Raitenau has persuaded his family to open his castle to tourist guests with the family serving as the domestics to get some ideas for a new comedy he is going to write.
