在这部继父悬疑/惊悚片中,在名叫波特兰的小镇，单身母亲苏珊·哈丁（雪拉·渥德 Sela Ward 饰）和一双儿女肖恩（Braeden Lemasters 饰）、贝丝（Skyler Samuels 饰）共同生活在一起，其长子迈克尔（佩恩·拜德格雷 Penn Badgley 饰）则在外地的军校求学。某日，苏珊在超市遇见了名叫大卫·哈里斯（迪伦·沃尔什 Dylan Walsh 饰）的单身男子。大卫举止得当、言语风趣，俨然一个完美的居家好男人。两人相见恨晚，只有半年便到了谈婚论家的地步。哈丁一家对大卫颇为满意，独有迈克尔似乎心存顾忌。
